3 Lies The Internet Believes About Extroverts

Very much inspired by my friends over at Zoelogist and The Sea Calls Us Home. I absolutely love you guys. ;D

As we all know, the introverts have begun to dominate the internet. Anonymous support groups have been made, consistent blog posts are created, and self-help courses have all been consumed by the introverted majority. Us extroverts have been dissed to the ends of the earth and made fun of for our desperate need want for human interaction and mediocre conversational abilities.

All of us extroverts are not the cookie cutter image that has been spread around and beaten into the dirt- for I, Felicity Annora, have experienced both extroversion and introversion. Call me sensei, because I shall now show you the ways of the true extrovert.

and can we talk about how silly this intro is? i’m making this sound like a weird dramatic lead in to a movie or something

However, you must understand what “extrovert” and “introvert” means in the first place.

Extrovert is not a synonym for “shallow.” Nor will you find “a lover of small talk” as the definition in the dictionary. The same goes for introvert- you will not find “a deep soul-searcher” as the definition of an introvert.

Introversion and Extroversion simply describes how you get your energy. If you are an introvert, you get tired of people and need to go sit by yourself for a little while to feel energized. If you are an extrovert, you feel energized from spending time with people.

You will occasionally find an ambivert. These rare unicorns get energy from spending time with people, yet experience periodical moments where they NEED to get away to take a quick mental break (which is usually due to sensory overload). They never take long breaks, though- and hop right back into the maddening crowd when they’ve had their breather.  They are Divergent and must be killed because they disrupt the system.

One person can never fully be introvert or extrovert, which is why SO MANY people identify as an ambivert- though we are not discussing this type today. Which is why I’m sweeping this under the rug for now.

*sneakily pushes it out of view before you have the chance to comment on it*

So now that’s out of the way- let’s dive into the lies that the internet believes about extroverts.

LIE 1: We’re all confident and have the wit of 100 people.

*crickets chirp loudly*

*one lone man coughs in the background*

NO.

Whoever spread this around was a dirty rotten liar and his pants literally caught on fire.

A lot of us actually have stage fright and have issues trying to talk cohesively in sentences. Around this time last year, I would’ve nervously laughed and shook my head if you told me that I would become the official speaker for my youth group’s announcements. It was only up until recently that I have become happier with how quickly my brain forms responses.

And even then, you can still basically hear my brain farts across the room when the situation occurs.

It’s not pretty when you catch me on a slow day. I have a feeling that a lot of my fellow extroverts feel the same way.

LIE 2: All extroverts are positive, smile a lot, and talkative- and therefore, are somehow stupid.

My intuition tells me that this is the underlying issue of the reason why we constantly get labeled as “shallow.”

First of all- not all extroverts are positive. I have met a few extroverts who are toxic to be around or only mope. I don’t have many friends who are like this because, personally, I find personalities like that to be extremely draining and annoying. I would also probably tell them to take a short walk off of a tall building if I was hanging out with them everyday.

Secondly- just because we are outgoing and smile DOES NOT MEAN WE ARE STUPID. We are not smiling idiots. We are smiling because we were thinking about the good things that happened to us, we’re having an awesome daydream, we just heard a good joke, we actually got to talk to someone, or smiling is better than going ballistic and screaming at anyone who bumps shoulders with us at the grocery store. no lie, I was close to doing that one time when I was in a bad mood and felt too crowded

I’m pretty vocal about this topic because it’s something that happens to me almost every time I go out. I literally feel judged for smiling too much as I’m walking around the store. And it’s still something that I surprise my close friends with when they find out I try to do challenging things like learn a new language or debate politics with them.

As for being talkative… well, we have our moments where we talk over each other and create mass confusion. But that doesn’t mean we’re shallow. It’s just means that we’re loud (and sometimes ridiculously excited) about the things we’re passionate about.

LIE 3: If we’re not talking, then there’s something very VERY wrong going on.

I’ve had friends come up to me and scream at me:

“ARE YOU OKAY? YOU’RE VERY QUIET! ARE YOU UPSET?”

No, I am not upset-

I am okay. I just can’t be “on” all the time.

Extroverts are not immune to the effects of sleep deprivation (even though it’s sometimes delayed due to the energy spikes we get when we hang out around people). There are even a few of us who can’t string a sentence together for the life of them until it’s past 10:00am and they’re on their 3rd cup of coffee.

We have our quiet days.

This especially goes for the shy extroverts. We have moments where our mouth can’t keep up with our brain, and we have moments where we can’t find anything to say and enjoy people watching at that moment.

Don’t worry- we usually wear our emotions on our sleeve. You’ll KNOW when we’re upset or having a bad day.

So that was a few things about extroverts! Are you an extrovert and can totally relate to this post? Or do your know someone like this that would claim that this was themselves in a nutshell? I would love to hear from you!

Thanks for reading to the end of the post!

  1. I love this! I’m not an extrovert, but I feel as if the definitions extrovert and introvert have become so convoluted because of talk on the internet.

Extrovert and introvert only have to do with how you get energy, and so it’s always nice to see someone fighting the associated stereotypes 😀

As an introvert I get stereotyped as shy and quiet (which I am around strangers :P), but I can be fairly outgoing and loud if I just have the energy for it. I also enjoy public speaking which shocks a lot of people when they find out.

Unfortunately that has led to some issues though… My mom is an extrovert and very sociable, and because we look so similar, people assume that I am one too and then ignore me when I tell them I have social anxiety :/ Has led to some issues, but not in the past year or so.

    1. No joke! Whenever I look up introvert and extrovert memes and jokes, I end up coming away a little depressed because just about all of the jokes belittle the extrovert and make the introvert some sort of modern day superhero. >.> (Don’t get me wrong- you guys are awesome, but I feel like I needed to bolster my fellow internet wandering extroverts)

Yay! You go girl, and take a wrecking ball to more of those stereotypes! I actually have a love/hate relationship with public speaking. There’s something powerful about getting up in front of people and captivating their attention (for at least a few minutes before they’re on their phones) and I love entertaining people, but I worry about my mouth not being able to keep up with my brain or butchering words. My youth group is very nice about that. They’ve learned to laugh with me as I mess up badly and have to restart my train of thought. XD

Ewwwww. Social anxiety is awful. I used to have anxiety when I talked in groups when I was younger- I could literally feel my heart beating faster as I was trying to prep for what I was about to say in my head. And your situation seems even worse because nobody believes you have it! :C Hope you get over it soon. ❤

      1. Aww, thanks for the encouragement! My social anxiety used to be so much worse, but it has improved a ton over the past year. 😀 Now social situations just give me mild anxiety instead of full blown panic attacks.

  2. *Waves wildly* I AM AN EXTROVERT ;D

But yes, I love this post. ❤ It's all true, man, all true. XD

The only thing is that I don't think ambiverts exist? Cause like… you're never gonna be 100% an extrovert or introvert and when people don't fit "100%" either of those, they slap the ambivert label on themselves. It's more "which fits you /more/", you know?

    1. YAY! I have baited and captured the wild Ruby in my comment section! XD

XDDDD Good to know I wasn’t just purely talking out of my hat and trying to apply it to every extrovert. xD

Exactly- I get what you’re saying. But I have bumped into people who really couldn’t fit into either category, and so ambivert fit them best. That’s why I labeled them as unicorns. It’s super rare if you can actually find a person that can say that they have the impulse to go be out in a crowd, and then just a while later have the sudden urge to get out of the crowd just as fast as they wanted in. xD

  3. As a person who’s most likely 66% extrovert, I think you nailed these things. I am comfortable in public settings even when I’m not, if that makes sense, and I don’t overthink things to the point where it paralyzes me. However, I need to have alone time to just chill because though I don’t get completely depleted by crowds and busyness, there comes a point when I’m done. And when I’m done, I’m DONE. Ready to go home, be silent, and read.

    1. Yup- that sounds about right. Even as a self-proclaimed extrovert, I have moments where I need to get away from people and be by myself. There’s only so much extroverting I can do before I’ve had it with people and need to go snuggle in a peaceful corner with a book or my guitar.

Maybe it’s a side effect from being homeschooled… I’ve noticed that extroverted homeschoolers enjoy their alone time more than public or private schooled extroverts. 😛

  4. Okay, so this was creepily accurate….. EXTREMELY creepily accurate, even. XD

DUDE. FRIEND. MYTHICAL BEAST. HOW IN THE WORLD DID YOU CAPTURE MY EXTROVERTEDNESS SO PERFECTLY??? I didn’t think this was even possible, to be honest. Also, I’ve always thought that I’m a very odd extrovert, because sometimes I am SUUUUPER loud and obnoxious and honestly quite annoying, and other times I’m just….not. XD So OH HEY PERHAPS I AM AN AMBIVERT???? *yanks topic out from beneath the carpet*

But anyway. I absolutely loved this post, my friend! This was the most relatable thing of ever… And wait…people think we’re stupid because…we’re happy??? THIS IS THE LAMEST THING EVER LIKE WHAT???? Lame-o judgey people. I’m gonna chomp their heads off with my smiley teeth is what I’m gonna do.

    1. LOL. KENZIE, I LOVE YOU .>

I HAVE NO IDEA. 😀 I was mainly talking out of my own experiences- and when I looked up lists online, I found out that I wasn’t alone. So I decided to make a list on my own blog. ❤ Also when I talked with Ruby, I did notice that a lot of ENFPs are on the quieter end of the extrovert spectrum. We have wild and crazy sides and then we have the side where we sit awkwardly in a corner staring at everyone that comes too close. XD
….Well, now that you've yanked the ambivert topic from underneath the carpet, I feel okay bringing it up. XD I think I'm actually starting to lean towards ambivertedness. I was at my youth group's lock-in last Friday, and had the strongest urge to run away to a quiet corner and just cry to myself. Karaoke was too loud and overwhelming my senses, I didn't really want to talk to the new people that had come with their friends- all I wanted to do was get away or crawl up the wall to get away from people. As soon as I got away and let myself cry for a little bit and read my Bible, I was literally good as new and jumped into the friend group that was messing with the music and singing karaoke. I was dancing and going crazy like Elvis up there. XD

I'm absolutely thrilled that you liked this post! 😀 And yeah… I think it has something to do with a mindset of "If you're smiling, then you've obviously had nothing hard happen to you to where you don't want to smile. Or you wouldn't understand why I'm having a hard time." It's absolutely ridiculous, even though I don't plan on not smiling anytime soon. (also I might've laughed at what you said about chopping their heads off with your smiley teeth. really loudly. XD)

      1. AWWWWWW! I love you, too, my smol friend!!!

Ohhh! Well, it would seem as though the human race has a lot more in common than we thought?? (Though I’m part dragon, so. XD ) OH MY WORD, YOU’RE ENFP, TOO???? I knew Ruby was, but I didn’t know you were!! We need to form like a club or something. I’ll bring the cookies. Ha! That is also extremely accurate. XD

Oh no, I’m so sorry! That sounds like a sort of terrible experience??? But then it gets better so YAY, HAPPY ENDINGS!!! Yeah, I’m pretty much the same. I’m super energetic around people USUALLY, but then there are times when I just kind of like being alone. That might be normal for most people, though, because don’t we all just need a LITTLE time to ourselves sometimes?? Maybe?? XD HAHA! YES!! BE THE NEXT ELVIS, FELICITY!! Except don’t die. That would make me sad…

Oh yeah, that makes sense. But it’s so harsh for people to judge what’s going on inside based on outward appearance. Although, I guess I do this too on occasion? I should really work on that… MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! YES!! #missionaccomplished Laughter is good for the soul. But don’t tell the judge-y people that. XD

  5. This is SO GOOD 😂 As the introvert I’ve been my whole life, it took me a long time to realise that the world isn’t split into two kinds of people: introverts and extroverts. Aaaaaand it took me a while to realise that “extroverts” aren’t as loud, hyper, excited, high (😂😂😂) as they make out. We’re all awkward creatures trying to figure life out.
    Such a good post! ❤

    1. YAY! 😀 I’m thrilled that you liked this post! ❤

Yeah, I know- I ride the fine line between extrovert and introvert, and it still took me forever to not be judgy of the people who identify themselves as one or the other. XD (LOL, high! I'm dead!)

I'm sure that there are people out there like that, but I've come to learn that just because one person is like that doesn't mean that others are! c:

Thanks again for stopping by! C:
